In the aftermath of the holocaust, Corrie ten Boom declared that “there is no pit so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still.” That is the testimony of my life. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and trafficking, I started my journey with Reclaim13 by first reclaiming my own innocence, an innocence that was shattered by people who should have cherished and protected me. I now work to “Take 13 Back” by communicating my story of sexual violation and God’s healing through writing, speaking, and art. My goal is to share hope with other survivors as well as those working in prevention, outreach, and aftercare.
Like every child who has experienced abuse, I believed that I was the one who was bad and I felt terrible shame just for being a little girl. Thankfully, I have been able to work with a wonderful team of therapists and prayer ministers who have helped me to connect with the most wonderful healer of all, Jesus. I now understand that because He is not bound by time or space, He was there holding me and caring for me through my loneliest and most frightening experiences. I want other victims of abuse to experience that same love – the love that heals the deepest wounds of the heart and restores the lost joy of being a beloved child.
As a teacher and a mentor for over 20 years, I have dedicated my life to investing in children’s academic, emotional, and spiritual development. The most important thing I teach them is that no matter what challenges they face, they are children of promise, who have been “fearfully and wonderfully made” by their loving Father in heaven (Psalm 139).
