The issue of human trafficking was always something that had laid heavily on my heart. Every time I heard the song “Do Something” by Matthew West, a Christian singer/ songwriter, I was reminded and convinced that I needed to do something to be a part of the solution. But it wasn’t until I had my own family that I finally took my first steps in this journey.
I first became aware of Reclaim13 and the work they are doing at a women’s Bible study group at Parkview Christian Church. Not long afterwards I met Cassandra Ma, Reclaim13’s Executive Director, and it was she who convinced me to finally get involved. “What can I do?” I asked. Her response: “What do you want to do?” We danced around those two questions for a few minutes until I finally realized I just needed to jump in and do something. I soon learned that not only are there opportunities to help, but that those opportunities are truly endless.
Eventually I became the Director of Volunteer Engagement. I thrived in my role behind the scenes and was very happy helping our amazing volunteers to shine and do what they do best. I am naturally a back stage kind of person, so when I was asked to be a part of the “Take 13 Back” Campaign I was initially uncomfortable. I reminded myself, however, that doing something sometimes means being placed outside our comfort zones, and that, in the words of Matthew West, “we’re never gonna change the world by standing still.”
